Downtown Las Vegas is one location that lags behind The Strip by far. It only features one major attraction that is the 1,400 feet pedestrian area, "Freemont Street Experience". Even so, the attraction consists of a prosaic but still unignorable light & sound show, provided by the 90 feet above the street canopy-screen that spans the whole 1,400 feet distance.
The main reason of this delay in the area's development lies in "sin-city's" history. The Strip, formerly not part of Las Vegas but of Clark County, wasn't paying the casino taxes. In Las Vegas, casinos had to pay taxes for every type of gaming activity. Due to that, The Strip was the main attraction for casino owners.
Building Golden Nugget resort was supposed to bring to life the downtown area. "Freemont Street Experience" somehow strived for the same goal. For a trade, Downtown Las Vegas remains the location where you can find the cheapest hotels in town.
