Practicing tumbling, cartwheels and back flips three nights a week at Adventure Park has paid off for 33 young cheerleaders.

The 8- to 11-year-old girls on the Whittier Redskins Junior Pee Wee Cheer squad earned first place Saturday in the "show cheer intermediate division" at the JAMZ National Youth League Championships in Las Vegas.

"The other teams were tough, but we knew we had good strong stunts and felt really confident going into it," said Erika Janacua, a 10-year-old tumbler.

The girls received a trophy, new jackets and individual medals. The team also earned a third-place win against seven other teams in the "performance cheer" category.
